The Ginger Room Opens in Downtown Alpharetta

By The Ginger Room February 18, 2021

The first Ginger Tea Room in the Atlanta metro area and the entire South has opened in Alpharetta’s historic Skelton-Teasley House, a Greek Revival-style home dating back 165 years. Owned and run by the same entrepreneurs that founded the uber successful specialty ginger drink company Ginger Yums, The Ginger Room will focus on all things ginger with a healthful variety of ginger teas, coffees and signature Ginger Yums juices.

Flooded in natural light and featuring local antique finds paired with modern accessories, The Ginger Room offers guests a sophisticated and unique venue to enjoy locally roasted coffee with friends or meet with colleagues over an authentic midday afternoon or British high tea. The Ginger Room features more than 30 house blends of local, national and international teas ranging from Chai Box, Jayce Isaac Tea Collection and Claire Tea (all local teas) to interesting blends like Ginger Peach Cobbler tea, Earl Grey Crème, Liquid Jade, Bloody Mary or Chamomile & Bee Pollen.

Co-owners Angela Avery and Dr. Karl Walbrook modeled The Ginger Room after the finest British High Tea experiences from across the pond and chose décor that highlights modern, local artists and historic collectibles like antiques from the 1800s, British Crown sconces, and crystal chandeliers.

“After visiting and falling in love with a very special tea room in London, England we knew we had to bring the experience to Atlanta,” said Angela Avery, co-founder of The Ginger Room. “And who better to host a proper British High Tea than Dr. Karl, since he’s originally from Central London and enjoyed tea growing up? Finding the Skelton-Teasley House was pure providence because it’s the perfect location to marry the tradition and history of High Tea with our 21st century, modern, innovative and healthful ginger menu.”

Ginger is most commonly known for calming digestive issues and soothing an upset stomach, but has also been reported to possess anti-inflammatory properties helping with colds and flu, blood circulation, arthritis and cholesterol. In fact, it was Avery’s longtime digestive discomfort that was the impetus for creating Ginger Yums in 2018.

“My entire life I was plagued with stomach issues which all came to an end when Karl went into the kitchen and created the most delicious juice I have ever tasted – using ginger,” Avery said. “Not only was it wonderful, it actually made me feel better.”

A month later, Ginger Yums was born. Billed as “The Feel Good Taste Good Drink,” Ginger Yums has been a staple at Atlanta-area farmers markets and festivals, and the brick and mortar boutique in Peachtree Corners transitioned to online ordering, delivery and take out during the pandemic. The Ginger Room was the next logical step in the Ginger Yums revolution.

British High Tea at The Ginger Room begins with the first step into the beautiful historic house where guests are greeted with lovely décor, the ambiance of white linen tablecloths and other traditional accoutrements. After a proper welcome, guests are provided a few fun tips to make the experience memorable, then tea begins. In addition to the centerpiece beverage, an impressive and beautiful tea tower features finger sandwiches and fresh scones with housemade clotted crème, strawberry preserves and fresh Ginger Yums pineapple ginger marmalade. The tower’s top tier is an impressive assortment of desserts including local macarons, petit fours, Belgian truffles, and Bakewell tarts, Dr. Karl’s signature creation. If guests have a favorite or sentimental family tea set, they are welcome to bring it to The Ginger Room to make their High Tea event even more personal.

With a focus on local farmers, roasters, bakers, artisans and other businesses, The Ginger Room features the most delicious, fresh and creative food and beverage options from neighborhood creators. A few examples include fresh baked bread from My Daily Bread, gourmet pimento cheese from Suga’s, macarons from Lady Belle Macarons, cakes and cupcakes from Nana’s House and In My Fillings, and a specially crafted coffee blend made in house with fresh root ginger (Ginger Yums original) combined with the most popular cold brew from local roasters including Rev Coffee and Cloudland Coffee Company. Other innovative and delicious coffees include tiramisu ginger coffee and signature strawberry ginger mocha.

The 1,200 square foot Ginger Room features the Parlor, the Parterre or patio, and The Walbrook Room, named after Dr. Karl. In addition to fresh food and delectable beverages, hot and cold, guests can peruse the retail section and take home a favorite tea or coffee, local honey, toffee, chocolate, candle, or fascinator from a local artisan.
