Let's Geaux For a Local Bike Ride!

Bikeshare program allows for a pay per use bike rental

By Karen Cohen, publisher of Macaroni Kid Alpharetta-Roswell-Milton August 6, 2020

Our boys have bikes, but I don't. The times we have gone on the Greenway Trail, I run or walk -- but I can never keep up with tween/teen boys on bikes. I thought about buying a bike, but kept wondering if I would really get that much use out of it.

And then I read about Geaux Bikes. It is a pay-per-use bikeshare program located at Halcyon and Fowler Park. It is $5 a hour, so I thought this would be an easy way to join a bike ride with the boys one morning.

I was looking all around at Halcyon for a brick and mortar store. The 40 something generation that is me expected to walk in a store, pay, and walk out with a bike. But, I couldn't find the store anywhere. It was my 13-year-old who rolled his eyes and said, "Mom, the bikes are outside on a rack, you download an app and scan the QR Code." Um, yes, I knew that... but I let him take my phone and set me up anyway...

And then we were off riding! There is direct access to the Big Creek Greenway from Halcyon

The app even tracks how far and how long you ride. This section of the Greenway is fairly flat and shaded. I hadn't been on a bike in a long time and it was enjoyable. For a brief moment, I shut my eyes and imagined myself as Dorothy from Wizard of Oz with Toto riding in the bike basket, "There's no place like home." But, then I quickly realized the pandemic has kept us home way too much and I wanted to imagine myself any place other than home... so, it was back to the Greenway!

We rode over boardwalks and bridges. We passed creeks, and of course the boys had to stop to look for fish, frogs and creatures.

After a little over an hour, we returned my bike back to the outdoor rack at Halcyon.

We of course worked up an appetite and decided to eat lunch at our favorite spot, Sweet Tuna. If you haven't been to Halcyon, in addition to many great full service restaurants, there is also a market hall with several quick counter service restaurants where you can order and then take your food outside.

 TIPS

  • Download the app before you go -- it is Bloom Sharing.
  • Bring a small backpack to wear while you ride, Put some waters/snacks, so you can stop and refuel.
  • The Big Creek Greenway access point sign is small. It is at the right side corner of the intersection of Ronald Reagan and Halcyon across from Ocean and Acre - before you cross the intersection.
  • Bring your own helmet.
  • Bikes are regular sizes - not kids. I loaded our kids' bikes in our car.
