SLICE OF LIFE: Back to School? Bring it On!

By Erin Stolle, Publisher/Editor - Macaroni Kid Alpharetta-Roswell-Milton August 7, 2017

My boys start back to school today. And I'm not sad.

That's right. I'm not. We had a tremendous summer. We traveled to Montana where we hiked mountains, fished in cool streams, and rekindled relationships with family we hadn't been able to see in over five years. We walked, hiked and ran the distance of a marathon in our Macaroni Marathon family challenge. We ventured to LanierWord, Chattahoochee Nature Center, went bowling, swimming, saw some baseball games, and even played in some.....okay, a lot of baseball games.

Looking back, it was a fun-filled summer and I truly couldn't have asked for more.

So, yes, I'm ready for the school bus to come puttering down our street and for the structure and routine to return to our lives. It's time for me to catch back up on laundry and order in the house. Okay, let's be real. I know my dreams of organization and to-do lists growing smaller rather than larger is just that....a dream. But maybe I'll be able to cross one or two more things off than I managed to get to this summer. (Can anyone relate to getting 10 years of photos off the computer and into albums?! Gasp! Just me?)

It's not just for me, though, as I can tell my boys are craving a routine, too. They're missing their friends and social interaction with others beyond their brotherly bond. Whether they'll admit to it or not, they're craving a more structured sleep schedule. And, they're looking forward to the growth and advancement that can only come from consistent challenges.

Perhaps you've seen this in your family, too. No matter if your kids climb on a big, yellow bus, learn from a classroom setting in their home, or spend a few hours preparing for the time they'll get on that bus, routine is a positive thing and it's time for us to welcome it into our reality for the next several months.

So, whether your kids started back last week, this week, or a few weeks from now, join me as we embrace this time of the year and fall back into a rhythm that, though it seems like it can rule your life, also brings about so many wonderful experiences and opportunities and growth.

Now, pardon me while I head off to make my list and knock out another load of laundry. I'm ready to start this school year off with a bang. Once you get back from following the bus to make sure it made it to school safely and drying your tears, I hope you'll join me!
