Review: MacLarry & The Stinky Cheese Battle

The Latest DVD Release from the VeggieTales Gang Teaches "Getting Along with Others."

August 19, 2013
I have to admit it....this is the first VeggieTales show I have ever sat through.  I had heard about VeggieTales, heard my friends talk about how much their kids loved it, and I think we even own a VeggieTales DVD. But for some reason, Finding Nemo or Cars or Sesame Street would always find its way onto our television instead.

Thankfully, my job as a Macaroni Kid publisher gives me a lot of opportunities...this time reviewing an advanced copy of the newest VeggieTales DVD: MacLarry & The Stinky Cheese Battle. And I say "thankfully" because I have now discovered why my friends rave about this collection. It was great!

If you're not familiar with the VeggieTales line, it consists of "faith-based products that help teach meaningful life lessons all while making children smile." And honestly, you could add parents to that, too. I was smiling and laughing through the whole show!

Here's the Synopsis:
MacLarry and the Stinky Cheese Battle features the Veggie gang in a make-believe land where ancient Scotland and ancient Rome are in the midst of the silliest prank feud of all time, where the tools of battle are pies and water balloons.  This latest action adventure features a full cast of fan-favorites, including Larry the Cucumber as MacLarry, Bob the Tomato as MacBob, and Mr. Lunt as the mischievous Pompous Maximus.

At the core of this new story is the lesson of getting along with others – a value that is top of mind for parents of preschoolers.

Back to my Thoughts:
The storyline was so cute, with humor simple enough for my 2-year-old and 7-year-old to enjoy, but also sophisticated enough for me to appreciate. And the lesson of loving each other for who they are is one that children and adults should probably hear from time to time. Let's face it, sometimes we need the reminders, too!

You see, MacLarry's dad expected him to be just like everyone else in the village. But when MacLarry didn't measure up to his dad's expectations and his talents went unrecognized, he felt sad and wanted to find a place where someone understood him. In his journey to find such a place, MacLarry found himself in a bit of trouble. Using his God-given talents, he was able to teach others how we should put down our "weapons" and work together for a common good.

I love how there are songs throughout the story to help solidify the lesson. In the final song, we were left with these words: Differences don't divide us, but bring us together. Your talents are all part of God's gift.

What better message can our children hear in this day and age? Rest assured, VeggieTales will be more frequently playing on our television from here on out.
