Inaugural Paint The Town: Alpharetta Plein Air Art Event

Paint The Town: Alpharetta Plein Air is multi-day plein air event coming to Alpharetta May 18 – 29, 2021.  The 5-day Plein Air Invitational kicks off the festivities with over 50 artists painting in outdoor locations throughout the city for the public to watch and enjoy. Activities surrounding the Plein Air Invitational also include a plein air seminar, wet paint tent sale, quick draw competition, awards presentations and an art exhibition. This event is the first of its kind in Alpharetta and will be hosted by Arts Alpharetta in partnership with the City of Alpharetta and the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Plein air comes from the French en plein air, is the method of painting outdoors directly from life. This style of landscape painting was made popular by French impressionists in the 19th century. It has become a wildly popular practice with artists around the world.  

During the event’s 5-day Plain Air Invitational, May 18 – 22, art lovers will have the chance to watch artists in action at well-known locations throughout Alpharetta. The plein air locations will include Downtown Alpharetta as well as the city’s parks, gardens and more. There will be plenty of opportunities purchase original art that was created during the Plein Air Invitational at the Wet Paint Tent Sale at the Alpharetta Farmers Market on May 22 or at the Plein Air Exhibition at the Alpharetta Arts Center from May 22 - 29.

“We are excited to host so many outstanding and well-recognized professional artists to paint our lovely town,” said Nancy Murphy, Arts Alpharetta Program Director. “And we are thrilled to support novice painters trying their hand at plein air. We hope that the public will enjoy watching artists in action as well as seeing the finished paintings of Alpharetta. Paintings will be available for purchase at the Alpharetta Arts Center from May 22 - 29."

Paint The Town: Alpharetta Plein Air Event Schedule

  • Painting En Plein Air with Jill McGannon Seminar: Tuesday, May 18, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Award -winning professional artist Jill McGannon will take students through the creation of a plein air painting, from selecting what to pain, creating a strong and dynamic composition, to the block in and then painting in either oils or acrylics. Open to all skill levels. $125, registration required.
  • Wet Paint Tent Sale: Saturday, Saturday, May 22, 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Small studies (6”x6”) of Alpharetta plein air paintings will be available for purchase at the Alpharetta Farmer’s Market.
  • 5 Day Plein Air Invitational: Tuesday, May 18 – Saturday, May 22
  • Quick Draw Competition: Saturday, May 22, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Plein Air artists are given two hours to complete a piece. $25, registration required.
  • Quick Draw Awards Presentation: Saturday, May 22, 12 p.m. Award winners from the Quick Draw Competition will be announced at the Brooke Street Park band stand (behind Alpharetta City Hall).
  • Plein Air Exhibition Awards: Saturday, May 22, 5-7 p.m. at the Alpharetta Arts Center
  • Plein Air Exhibition on view: May 22 – 29. Plein Air works will be for sale at The Alpharetta Arts Center during regular business hours.

Paint the Town: Alpharetta Plein Air is a fun outdoor event for artists and free for spectators. It is also an opportunity for art enthusiasts to support the arts. Proceeds from the event will fund two initiatives: Take Out Art: which supplies free art kits for children in our community and the Public Art Fund: supporting the lease of public art in partnership with the City of Alpharetta.
