The summer is upon us.  And, it has been quite a different and challenging year for academics. Yet, there is one essential and simple way to help cultivate your child's learning this school break.... READING!

Below are five tips to help encourage your kids to read this summer:

Establish a routine: Make reading time a part of your daily schedule. Carve out at least 30 minutes that is dedicated to books. Find a time that works for your family, such as in the morning or right before bed and turn it into a fun habit.

Find books that align with interests: Does your child like sports, fantasy, animals, mysteries? Whatever their interests may be, select books that match topics they will enjoy.

Create a fun reading spot: Let your child build their own reading nook! It could be bean bag chairs, LED lights, forts or cozy blankets -- whatever it may be, let them designate and design a personal reading spot.

Read aloud or together: Have your child select a book you both can read. Then, you can read it aloud together. Or, both you and your child can silently read the same book separately and then talk about it.

Utilize the library: Currently, Fulton County libraries are offering curbside services. If you don't already have a library card -- you can sign up online HERE. Then, you can place up to 15 books on hold and you will be notified when they are ready for curbside pick up. Full details on Fulton County Library curbside can be found HERE

Phase Family Learning Center in Alpharetta uses books and reading to help our students explore their imagination and discover new and exciting things. Phase staff pairs a book with an activity in our STEM room and for art and all enrichment. Recently, we hosted Avalon's Little Acorn program and used the book: "In the Tall, Tall Grass," and the students created their own art scene of bugs and flowers in their tall grass.

In addition, Phase hosted two community story events with a Wild West, Western theme.
