Local Girl Scout Troop Sweetens Lives Through Cookie Sales

By Erin Stolle, Publisher/Editor Macaroni Kid Alpharetta-Roswell-Milton June 26, 2017

Girl Scout Troop 16603 was brand new to selling cookies this season, but armed with a smile, these 15 girls, ages 6 and 7, knocked on neighbors' doors, greeted customers at store entrances, and even collected sales online. Not only did they put a lot of heart into their sales, they brought smiles to more than just the people who bought the cookies.

"The girls worked hard and did a phenomenal job raising funds," said Jenny H., mom to Leigha, one of the girls in the troop.

The money raised through cookie sales is split between the Girl Scouts of America and the troop. The troop can choose how to use their profits, whether it be applied to scouting activities or charitable donations, or for Troop 16603, both!

The girls voted on where their profits should be donated and were torn between choosing an animal or human charity. Having met Officer Goins and K9 Leo earlier in the year during a K9 Unit presentation at JCPD, the girls instantly fell in love with K9 Leo and found a perfect opportunity when Officer Goins talked about a facility that they were building to help train the dogs.

The Troop donated $200 of their cookie sales to the brand new K9 Training Facility for Johns Creek Police Department and were invited to the opening day on May 9th. The Troop was awarded a certificate for their donation and the girls are very proud to have been part of this community project!

"It feels good to give back," said Ella, one of the girls in the troop. When asked the reason they chose this charity, she said, "So they (JCPD K9Unit) would have enough money to help take care of us. Because police dogs help save us."

Leigha and Katie, two other members of the troop, agreed with Ella and talked about how excited and happy they felt to give their profits to the charity, and how it made them feel helpful.

"I was so proud of our girls for not being greedy and wanting to keep all the money for themselves," said Jenny. "They did get a cookie reward party of painting pottery, but I think they were more excited to give the money to a charity!"

Well done, Troop 16603. Our community is blessed to have such charitable kids, and supportive parents, and we couldn't be more proud to feature you this week!
