My day off from cooking is on Sundays, so we all tend to pile in the car late Sunday afternoon ready to sink our teeth into some of the great food we have in our area. Now, coming from Texas, I know good food....and I especially know good BBQ. So when my husband requested to try out Smokejack in downtown Alpharetta, my interest was peaked!
To me, BBQ is not pulled pork. It's slow-cooked brisket and smoked sausage. It's melt-in-your mouth ribs with a side of mac & cheese. I was pleased to find that Smokejack was faithful to my idea of BBQ, as well as providing so many of the other Southern favorites I've gown to love since moving to the southeast.
Funny enough, I wasn't craving the taste of BBQ when my husband made his suggestion, but since it was his birthday, I obliged. I was extemely pleased with the selection of food that they had and was able to settle on the Low Country Shrimp Sandwich. I was slightly hesitant due to the "green tomato chow chow" that came on the sandwich, but our awesome (and patient) waiter, Stephen, assured me that I'd love it. I'm so glad that I trusted him as it was delicious! The sandwich was so large that I had half of it for leftovers the next day and it was just as good cold as it was when they brought it to our table.
Of course I never pass up macaroni and cheese, so I had that on the side and was quite satisfied! It's definitely a winner! They do have all of the traditional sides including baked beans (my husband loved these!), cole slaw, mashed potatoes and plenty of other options.
Our grade for a BBQ joint is always based on their chopped beef sandwich, so my husband ordered one and couldn't stop raving about it. Well done, Smokejack. Well done.
The kids meals are modestly priced (about $5 each which includes a drink), but not modestly portioned. Both of my boys ordered the hot dog with french fries and we were shocked by the amount of food on their plate. We were also shocked that our 6-year-old was able to put it all away! Two thumbs up from both of the boys!
