Craft: Candy Cane Vase/Centerpiece

By Suzan Sanchez, Owner of Suzie Q's Sweets and Treats December 3, 2012

‘Tis the Season, y’all!

Here is a cute and simple Holiday centerpiece.  This took me about an hour this morning. And really, if I didn’t have to work “crowd control” all morning, I probably could have finished in about a half hour.

For this project, you will need:

  • 1 cylindrical container – a drinking glass or a vase will work
  • 1 Rubber band
  • Holiday themed ribbon
  • Candy canes – real or plastic.  I chose plastic.  If I chose real candy canes, for sure, they would have somehow slowly disappeared in about a week.
    • I used about 30 candy canes in my project.  You will need to adjust depending on the circumference of your cylinder.
    • Flowers – silk/real, candles, other floral stemmed items (see below for options)

For this project, I chose to work with a regular drinking glass.  Gather the glass, 1 rubber band, and 1 candy cane together.  Wrap the rubber band around the glass and insert the candy cane into the rubber band.   HINT – your rubber band should be rather tight, so, you may need to wrap it twice.  This is what it will look like:

Add the candy canes around the glass.  I used about 30 plastic ones, and it looked like this:

Grab that cute Holiday ribbon, wrap it around the rubber band, and…

Look how cute!  Now comes the fun….

Carefully, drop some decorative marbles into the bottom of the glass, and add a candle, some berries, poinsettias, or a combination!

NOTE:  You will probably need to straighten the candy canes every so often.

Now you’re done!  Put this on display, and admire your handy work!  AND…here are some bonus options…..

- Decorative UGA candy canes, anyone?  Or, you could just buy these for the cute factor alone.  I found these at Wal-Mart while I was doing my “research” for this project.

And, instead of candy canes, how about some icicles:

Sparkly red, green and gold are ONLY three options.  There are plenty of additional options out there!

So, I hope you get those creative juices flowing.  As you can see, your options are quite plentiful.  All you need is your imagination, about an hour (probably less though), and you’re on your way to some festive Holiday fun.

Some other fun facts:
This project cost about 15ish dollars to make (depending on the version you are making).  I bought the flowers, candy canes, sparkly berries, taper candle, decorative marbles, and the drinking glass at the Dollar Tree.  I bought the rubber bands and the ribbon at Wal-Mart.  So, depending on your price point, you could buy supplies at any level of affordability.  No matter your price point, this craft will add Holiday warmth and sparkle to your home this season.

I hope you have fun making it, and happy crafting everyone!
