A CALL FOR LETTERS: The Bert Show's Big Thank You

October 17, 2016

I learned about Bert's Big Thank You a few years ago and absolutely loved the idea. What is it? It's a letter writing campaign with the goal of making sure every single deployed soldier receives a letter on Thanksgiving Day.

Following are the details from The Bert Show website. Will you sit down with your kids and write a letter? It doesn't have to be long. In fact, they say the 1-2 sentence letters from the kids are the most touching. I urge you to give it a shot and help make a difference in the lives of those that sacrifice so much for us.

Taken from The Bert Show website:

Over the past several years, The Bert Show community helped to express a BIG THANK YOU with over a million hand written letters of thanks to every serviceman and woman deployed outside the United States.

In past years, you guys have made such an impact on the lives of our military that First Lady Michelle Obama even called us to say thank you for what you’ve done!

This year our goal is the same, but we can only do this with your help. Let’s pull together to make this project a success!

Writing Guidelines:

Each letter should be heartfelt, handwritten, original, and free of any political statements. The purpose of the letter is to express thanks to the military personnel currently deployed outside the United States. We reserve the right to eliminate those messages that are political in nature and do not reflect a positive message in the spirit of Thanksgiving.

  • All letters must be on 8.5” x 11” paper or smaller.
  • Do not use glue, tape, staples, cardboard, glitter or otherwise attach anything to the paper.
  • NO construction paper.
  • Decorate using crayons, markers, pens or pencils.
  • Use both sides if you like, but use one page per letter only.
  • Do not send greeting cards or photographs.
  • Feel free to include your mailing and email address - sometimes military members will write back!
  • Individual letters should not be sealed in envelopes.
  • Do not send anything except letters.

(We cannot accept donations of any kind, and they should not be included or attached to letters.)

Letter Deadline:

All letters must be received NO LATER than October 28, 2016! That's when the station must have them, so please take that into account if mailing the letter.

Submitting the Letters:

Every individual letter is important, but for organizational purposes, please try to submit letters in bulk whenever possible. Work with your school, church, civic group, sorority/fraternity, office, neighborhood, etc. and send all letters bundled as directed below.

FOR GROUP SUBMISSIONS:
• Letters should be bundled in groups of 50, 100 or 250.
• Held together with two rubber bands: one wrapped lengthwise and the other widthwise.

FOR INDIVIDUAL SUBMISSIONS:
• The top page in the bundle should indicate clearly how many letters are included.
• Do not bundle letters unless they are in groups of 50, 100 or 250.
• If you have a partial bundle of less than 50 letters, fasten them together with a paperclip.
• The top page in the group should clearly indicate how many letters are included.
• When submitting 10 or fewer letters, the letters can be folded to fit into a standard business-size envelope

Mail them to Q100 at the address below:

Below is what my son wrote a few years ago. It makes me smile every time I look at it. I plan to do this with both of my boys this year. I hope you will, too.

Have a wonderful week,
Erin
